USGS Continuous Water Quality Monitoring

In 2002, the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began an ongoing project to assess and monitor water-quality conditions in Johnson County streams. Johnson County maintains a large flood-warning network in the county for flood warning and to assist in flood area planning. However, until the cooperative project with the USGS began, there were no routine water-quality sampling networks in the county other than required sewage treatment facility monitoring, and limited monitoring of streams by KDHE. The water-quality project, begun in 2002, included collection and analysis of water, sediment, and macroinvertebrate samples. In addition, the project includes the ongoing operation of continuous water-quality monitoring stations and collection of water samples for developing regression models to estimate concentrations and loads for selected water-quality constituents in five watersheds.
Two reports describing baseline water quality and biological conditions, along with fact sheets summarizing those reports, are available online at the USGS Johnson County website at http://ks.water.usgs.gov/Kansas/studies/qw/joco/.

Presentation to SMAC July 2007.
