Shawnee Mission Park Wetlands
Shawnee Mission Park ranks as the most-visited park in state of Kansas with over two million visitors each year. The main attraction of the park is a 120 acre lake that provides recreational opportunities like fishing, boating and swimming. In 2002 the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported that urban stormwater and runoff has contributed to a dissolved oxygen impairment reported during the most recent lake assessment. As urban development continues in the watershed stormwater pollution is likely to increase. In an attempt to improve water quality conditions in the lake the Johnson County Parks and Recreation department is constructing a wetland in the upper reaches of the lake.
Goals for the project are twofold. The first is to reduce sedimentation and pollutants associated with urban stormwater runoff into the lake. The second goal is to provide educational opportunities to park visitors, school groups, and the community on the beneficial aspects of wetlands in providing habitat for wildlife, plant diversity, and improvement of water quality inflows into the lake.
The project will generate high visibility given the popularity of the Park. For more information visit http://www.jcprd.com/parks_facilities/shawnee_mission.cfm or contact Bill Maasen, Johnson County Parks and Recreation, (913) 894-3342 or bill.maasen@jocogov.org.
