Continuous Streamflow Simulation

A comprehensive stormwater management programs has three major concerns:

  1. prevention or mitigation of flood damage,
  2. preservation or restoration of stream stability, and
  3. preservation or restoration of stream ecology.
The recent county-wide watershed studies have focused on flooding. Future efforts are likely to focus on stream stability and stream ecology.

The University of Kansas Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering, in cooperation with the Stormwater Management Advisory Council, are working to develop recommendations for continuous simulation of stream flow for Johnson County, Kansas. Continuous simulation of streamflow is focused on streamflow characteristics that affect stream stability and stream ecology. Once the recommended input parameters are developed, continuous streamflow models can be used to predict the impacts of land-use changes and stormwater best management practices on stream stability and ecology.
